Lyrics:

Sitting in the street

And praying for a change

This tepid sameness

Makes you do something strange

I’m not equipped to listen right now

And I can’t be present because

I’m hiding out

I’ve been hiding out

Right here in plain sight

And if I can’t be touched by the world

I can’t be blamed or denied

When you ran out to meet me

I knew something was wrong

Said you were dying, get a note to your son

But you looked just like me

Caught up in your own trap

Too scared to notice you were holding the match

I’ve been hiding out

Right here in plain sight

Can’t be touched by the world

I can’t be blamed or denied

We’re all just on the sidelines

There’s a war breaking out

The sirens ringing, we’re just saving ourselves

It’s hard to hear over the silence I’ve found

And there’s nothing changing

Blending into the crowd

I’m just hiding out

Right here in plain sight

And if I can’t be touched by the world

I can’t be blamed or denied

And all I have is just a song

And every song is just another lie

I’ve been hiding out…

About Hiding Out:

We've all wanted to be invisible at times, and there were a few weeks where that urge became really strong. I was burnt out from the intensity of the news cycle and just wanted to cocoon myself in the studio away from the awfulness and stupidity of the world. At the same time, I kept happening on these intense scenes of people doing the opposite - desperately trying to engage in some meaningful way through protests, cries for help, grabbing strangers off the street in a drugged frenzy...all way beyond my ability to engage. Being distracted is sort of an occupational hazard at the best of times, when you are caught up in a creative project, it is very easy to turn off the world and dive into it...sometimes in unhealthy ways. It was important for me that this song not be judge-y about it, because we all have to find some kind of balance. We've got to do what we can to affect positive change while reserving some energy to do the inner work we're all here to do. – Rob Oberdorfer

If “Nothing Serious” is about being caught in your own negative thought patterns, and “All the Sounds of Summer” is about attempting to move beyond these patterns and out into the world, then “Hiding Out” is about being outside in the world, but somehow remaining oblivious and insulated. Like the other songs on this record, I feel like Hiding Out explores in its own way how we choose to intertwine ourselves with the people around us. – Tim Perry
